Payment Information
Private Pay
Philadelphia Women’s Center is able to accommodate patients wishing to use health insurance to cover the cost of the abortion, as well as those paying out of pocket. Acceptable forms of payment are either cash (in the exact amount) or a credit or debit card (with proper ID). PWC does not accept money orders or personal checks. Abortion fees are determined based on the gestational age of the pregnancy (by ultrasound), and may include anesthesia. Payment for services must be made on the day you receive health care services.
Our abortion fees include all pre-op lab work and testing, ultrasound, counseling, birth control (for eligible women), the procedure itself (with anesthesia if needed or desired), as well as a check-up and any additional follow-up care. The only additional fee charged is the cost of a dose of Rhogam for women with an Rh negative blood type (our phones counselors will be happy to give you more information about Rhogam is you are unsure of your blood type). In addition, we offer a 3-month contraceptive shot (similar to Depo-Provera), that may be given on your procedure day, as well as a number of other birth control options like Implanon or an IUD. There is an additional fee for this type of birth control, though insurance or Medicaid may cover the cost, even if it does not cover the cost of an abortion.
Financial Assistance
Special funding is available for women in need. Patients having financial difficulty are encouraged to speak with a phone counselor about possible sources of funding, such as the Justice Fund. Philadelphia Women's Center is able to help most women in need. Please let us know as soon as possible if you think you may need assistance -- we're here to help.
Insurance
Those patients wishing to use insurance will need to provide all necessary insurance information prior to the scheduled abortion, and will usually be responsible for a co-pay or deductible. Philadelphia Women’s Center accepts the following insurance carriers:
- Aetna/US Healthcare
- Keystone Health Plan East
- Personal Choice
- Blue Cross/Blue Shield
- Amerihealth
- Healthnet
- United
- Cigna
These carriers are all private insurance plans, usually obtained through an employer. Most plans will cover elective abortion, but not all – patients are encouraged to contact their member services department for more information. All insurance benefits will be verified prior to the scheduled procedure. Any patient wishing to use insurance must provide a current insurance card and valid phone ID, as well as information on the guarantor of the policy, if different than the patient herself. Patients must call the afternoon before the scheduled abortion appointment to confirm benefits with Philadelphia Women’s Center – they will be instructed on the amount of their financial responsibility at this time.
If you have an insurance that is not listed above, please let us know, as it may still cover part of the cost of the procedure.
Medicaid (health insurance provided by the State for low-income individuals) in Pennsylvania will generally not cover the cost of an abortion. Some examples of Medicaid plans are:
- Keystone Mercy
- Americhoice
- Health Partners
For patients who became pregnant as the result of rape or incest, or for women with a life-threatening medical condition, coverage may be available with one of these plans. Women in these situations are required to see a physician, who will complete a form explaining the circumstances, which is then submitted to the Medicaid plan for review. If all criteria are met, the abortion may then be covered.
Philadelphia Women’s Center accepts patients with Keystone Mercy – those with other carriers are encouraged to call the office for more information, or referrals. This process can be lengthy, and a bit complicated – our phone counselors are trained to help patients each step of the way, and answer any questions about the steps involved.
